Man charged after sexually assaulting three teenage girls

We have charged a man with multiple sexual-related offences following reports from three different teenage victims who are believed to have been sexually assaulted by the same man.

In March 2024, the victim, who was 15 at the time of the incident, was with two friends at the Central Library, located at 800 Third St. S.E., and met a man who befriended the group of teens. A short time later, the three teens agreed to leave the library with the man and all four individuals got into the man’s car and drove around downtown, while the man offered the teens drugs.

Eventually the victim’s two friends left the vehicle, and the victim was alone with the man in the car. The man agreed to drive the victim to her residence, but on the way, made an unexpected stop at a parking lot in northwest Calgary, where he inappropriately touched the victim.

The victim was dropped off at her residence and reported the incident to police several weeks later.

In another instance, an additional victim, who was 13 at the time of the incident, came forward to police in the spring of 2024. The victim reported two occasions where she is believed to have met the same man downtown, and subsequently spent time with him in hotel rooms where he touched her inappropriately and sexually assaulted her, while offering her drugs.

Our Child Abuse Unit launched an investigation into the incidents and identified a third victim who recently came forward to police and reported she was sexually assaulted by the same man in February 2024, when she was 15 years old.

At the time, the man once again befriended the victim in downtown Calgary, took her to a nearby hotel room and sexually assaulted her while offering her drugs.

As a result, Abdulsatar Amad LUHAR, 47, of Calgary, is charged with three counts of sexual assault, three counts of sexual interference and one count of obtaining sexual services from a minor.

LUHAR remains in custody and will next appear in court on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025.

“Thank you to our investigators that have arrested and charged a man who is believed to be taking advantage of teenage girls by befriending them and engaging in inappropriate sexual conduct with them,” says Staff Sgt. Darren Smith of the Calgary Police Service Child Abuse Unit. “These types of incidents are very concerning for the community, and I want to commend the teens for coming forward to police to report the incidents that occurred. There is no statute of limitations on reporting sexual offences in Canada and we encourage anyone who has been the victim of a serious crime to report it, even if many years have passed since the incident.”

The victims have been connected with supports at the LUNA Child & Youth Advocacy Centre.

Anyone who believes they are a victim of sexual assault is encouraged to report it regardless of when it occurred, and anyone with information about these, or similar incidents, is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234.
