Man charged after firearms incident

A man has been charged following a firearms incident in Stanley Park yesterday.

At approximately 3:40 p.m., on Sunday, March 20, 2016, a member of public called police to report a man in the park with a firearm.

Police attended the scene and located a man who was carrying what appeared to be a handgun, walking between trees near an area where children were playing soccer.

With the assistance of HAWC, members attempted to clear the area as a precaution. Officers verbally engaged the man but he refused to comply. The situation escalated to the point where a member of CPS discharged a firearm. A suspect was subsequently taken into custody. There were no injuries.

Richard James WOLFCHILD, 23, has been charged with one count each of assault with a weapon, assaulting a peace officer, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and obstruction. WOLFCHILD will next appear in court on Wednesday, March 23, 2016.

As ASIRT continues to investigate the incident, no further comment will be available by the Calgary Police Service.
