Law enforcement partners team up to address safety of public spaces
Utilizing crime data, officers from the Calgary Police Service Community Engagement Response Teams, Transit Public Safety and Calgary Community Standards teamed up to disrupt drug trafficking in hot spot locations throughout the downtown and along transit during a four-day operation. As a result, seven people now face 47 charges.
Starting Thursday, June 20, 2024, officers identified street-level drug traffickers in the areas of:
- 800 block of Third Street S.E.
- Olympic Plaza
- Centre Street CTrain Station
- Eighth Street CTrain Station
- Shawnessy CTrain Station
The seven people arrested face a total of 47 charges for drug trafficking, breaches of court-imposed conditions, fraud and weapons-related charges. Brass knuckles and an imitation handgun were seized during the arrest.
“We recognize street-level drug traffickers may be trapped in addiction, and throughout this operation we worked with an AHS clinician to offer support and diversion courts in our city to ensure those who are candidates can be offered opportunities to access resources and the help they may need to find a different path,” says District 1 Inspector Jason Bobrowich.
“The behaviour demonstrated by these individuals can make people feel unsafe in our public spaces. This operation is a great example of law enforcement partners working together to ensure our public spaces remain comfortable and accessible.”
