Kensington Plaza just got a whole lot brighter

Kensington Plaza, in the heart of the Hillhurst/Sunnyside community and Kensington Business District just got an impressive makeover. Next to the historic Plaza Theatre and surrounded by a vibrant mix of businesses, Kensington Plaza has become a favourite hub for Calgarians and visitors. Working collaboratively with the Kensington BRZ, we are proud to deliver a series of improvements that were prioritized through public engagement.

These upgrades include unique sculptured benches, new healthy trees, additional bike racks, and updated surfacing. Enhanced lighting, utility upgrades, and dedicated spaces for temporary features like fire pits and movable furniture, offer flexibility for a range of activities and a welcomed upgrade for hosting community events and gatherings. So, whether you’re cozied up by the fire pit on chilly days, taking a break to read your favourite novel on a sunny afternoon, or cruising in on your bike to park and explore the area’s shops, this revitalized space is inviting to all.

"The Kensington Plaza Improvements is a remarkable project that not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of our Hillhurst/Sunnyside but also provides a safer and more welcoming environment for our visitors. It is a testament to the ongoing commitment to improving the livability and vibrancy of our city," says Ward 7 Councillor Terry Wong.

This project was funded by our Established Area Growth and Change Strategy program, which supports communities and local businesses where growth and change are happening and anticipated to happen. “Kensington Plaza is iconic to the area, and these improvements will enhance its attractiveness and vibrancy for many years to come. Through the Established Area Growth and Change Strategy, City Council is pleased to support this placemaking project in the heart of this beautiful community, as a means of supporting the growth and change of Hillhurst/Sunnyside,” says Lesley Kalmakoff, Coordinator Growth Strategy.

“Collaboration with the BRZ and community engagement were critical in shaping the vision for the Kensington Plaza,” says Project Manager Krista Renwick. “The design approach centered on enhancing the Plaza as a destination by introducing amenities that reflect the community’s priorities and support the activities and programming already thriving in this space.”

Join us at Kensington Plaza Saturday, Dec 23 for the official re-opening and holiday celebration, hosted by the Kensington BRZ. Starting at 12:30 p.m., indulge in steaming cups of coffee and hot chocolate by the fire, capture moments with Santa, glide through the streets on horse-drawn sleigh rides, and groove to live music—embracing the festive spirit in this reimagined space.
