Joint traffic enforcement operation results in 24 summonses

A joint traffic enforcement operation between the Calgary Police Service (CPS), Alberta Sheriffs, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) resulted in 24 traffic summonses being issued on the morning of Thursday, Aug. 21, 2025.

The operation took place along the Macleod Trail S.W. and Highway 2A corridor and lasted for approximately an hour.

Of the 24 tickets issued:

·         14 were for speeding, including one driver caught travelling 33 km/h over the posted limit

·         Eight were for equipment violations and failure to produce documents

·         One was for failing to stop at a stop sign

·         One was for running a red light

“It may sound like a common saying, but the truth is speed kills,” said CPS Staff Sgt. Scott Neilson, co-ordinator of the joint operation. “Drivers must slow down. No matter how skilled you think you are, when you’re driving at the speeds our officers are seeing, you simply can’t react quickly enough to sudden changes on the road.”

Staff Sgt. Neilson said the success of the operation was due to the strong collaboration between the CPS, Alberta Sheriffs and the RCMP.

“By working together and shifting resources where they were needed, we were able to increase our presence and improve road safety,” said Staff Sgt. Neilson. “Our officers have attended some truly tragic collisions this summer caused by speeding. Once those crash scenes are cleared, it’s the families who are left to deal with the heartbreak.”

The Macleod Trail S.W. and Highway 2A corridor is a heavily travelled area that has seen some devastating collisions, often linked to excessive speeding. To help address this issue, additional enforcement operations like this one are being planned for the future.
