Investigators seeking additional witness in collision investigation

Police continue to search for Talal AMER who is wanted on warrants in connection with the death of Angela McKenzie.

At approximately 11:10 p.m., on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, we received multiple reports of two vehicles that were driving erratically along 36 Street S.E., and involved in a shooting. The vehicles collided with two additional uninvolved vehicles in the intersection of 36 Street and 17 Avenue S.E., and one suspect fled the scene. The incident resulted in the death of Angela McKenzie, 40, a driver of one of the uninvolved vehicles. Several homes were also struck by gunfire during the incident.

Talal AMER, 29, is currently wanted on seven Canada-wide warrants for his role in this incident, including manslaughter, attempted murder and five weapons offences. AMER is described as approximately 5’11” tall, 230 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair.

Investigators have continued to review CCTV from the scene and believe that AMER may have been provided a ride by a citizen parked near the location of the incident, who was likely unaware of the collision that had taken place.

Detectives are looking to speak with this individual, who was parked near 17 Avenue and 36 Street S.E., on the night of Tuesday, May 10, 2022. A photo of their vehicle is available on The City of Calgary Newsroom.

“We believe that a citizen may have acted as a Good Samaritan and provided AMER a ride without knowing about the tragedy that had just occurred,” says Staff Sergeant Sean Gregson of the CPS Homicide Unit. “Based on the interaction with AMER, we don’t believe this individual was connected to the incident, however they may have important information that could help us locate AMER.”

Additionally, investigators believe that some people are assisting AMER in evading arrest. Anyone assisting AMER could face criminal jeopardy for their role in assisting him.

“We are seeking the assistance of the public who may know the whereabouts of Talal AMER and asking them to report it to the police. This is a tragic case and we are dedicated to locating him in order to bring justice for Angela’s family. Conversely, we will seek to hold all individuals accountable who may be helping AMER avoid being taken into custody,” says Staff Sergeant Gregson. “Individuals who are knowingly assisting AMER could be charged as an accessory to his crimes.”
