Investigation uncovers drug distribution, 3D-printed gun and makeshift conducted energy weapon
An investigation into a suspected fentanyl distribution operation in downtown Calgary has resulted in the seizure of a variety of drugs, a 3D-printed handgun, a makeshift conducted energy weapon and the recovery of more than $100,000 worth of stolen high-end clothing.
The investigation began in September 2024 following information from the public about the suspected drug operation. Several investigative techniques were utilized throughout the fall of 2024 where evidence of suspected drug distribution and trafficking were obtained and search warrants were granted for a vehicle, a residence and a detached garage.
On Thursday, Dec. 12, 2024, the search warrants were executed on a residence and a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the 1800 block of 14 Street S.W., and a detached garage in the 600 block of 28 Avenue N.W. Two men and one woman were taken into custody at the scene of the 14 Street S.W. residence. During the search, officers seized:
· 4.3 kg of fentanyl
· 2 kg of methamphetamine
· 11 grams of hydromorphone
· 5.6 grams of heroin
· 3.9 grams of cocaine
· 2.2 kg of an unknown powder
· $4,145 cash
· 3D-printed .22 calibre handgun
· Makeshift conducted energy weapon
· Hydraulic press
· Brick stamp press
On Monday, Dec. 16, 2024, another search warrant was executed at a storage locker. Approximately $100,000 worth of stolen clothing was located. It is believed to have been stolen during a break and enter at a business in Kensington in November 2024.
On Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024, a subsequent search warrant was executed at a residence in the 2300 block of 34 Avenue S.W. An additional 54 grams of methamphetamine and another $2,000 worth of stolen clothing were located.
As a result, four people face 17 Criminal Code charges directly tied to the drug manufacturing and distribution investigation. Charged are the following individuals:
· Christopher Paulo ALVES, 37 – one count of production of fentanyl, two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, one count of possession of a restricted firearm, one count of possession of a prohibited weapon and one count of possession of proceeds of crime. He will next appear in court on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025.
· Haley Elizabeth ERBACH, 32 – one count of production of fentanyl, two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, one count of possession of a restricted firearm, one count of possession of a prohibited weapon and one count of possession of proceeds of crime. She will next appear in court on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025.
· Clifford Clayton FAVEL, 48 – one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of possession and one count of failure to comply with a release order. He will next appear in court on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025.
· Roberto FERREIRA, 57 – one count of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. He will next appear in court on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2025.
Nine other individuals who were found at the locations of the search warrants were arrested on 15 outstanding Criminal Code warrants and 11 Traffic Safety Act warrants.
“This operation uncovered a significant drug distribution network within our city, which we believe had ties to B.C. That, coupled with the presence of homemade weapons is deeply concerning,” says District 1 General Investigations Unit Staff Sergeant Brad Moore. “The distribution of illicit substances is not a victimless crime. It is fuelled by violence and other property crime that has broader impacts on our city than those who are merely engaged in the drug trade.”
