Investigation into incident at CPS Arrest Processing facility

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating an incident inside the Calgary Police Service Arrest Processing Section (APS).

On Wednesday, July 3, 2019, a man was arrested on outstanding warrants and taken to the downtown centre at 316 7 Ave. S.E., around 6:50 p.m. and placed in a holding cell. Roughly two hours later, officers observed behaviour that caused them to enter the cell. The man was moved to an isolation cell where, once again, officers were required to enter the cell, at which time an altercation occurred and the man sustained what were believed to be minor injuries. He was taken to hospital, examined, treated and released back into CPS custody, returning to APS at approximately 4 a.m., on Thursday, July 4, 2019.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., on Thursday, July 4, 2019, APS staff was contacted by doctors who believed the mans injuries were more serious than first believed and requested he return to hospital. He has since been released from police custody but remains in hospital for unrelated reasons.

As a result of the confrontation and the subsequent serious injuries, the CPS contacted the Alberta Director of Law Enforcement who directed ASIRT to investigate the incident.

As this is now an active ASIRT investigation, no further details will be released.
