Industrial Yard Fire in Southeast Calgary

On Sunday April 16th, 2023 at approximately 5:40 PM the Calgary Fire Department responded to multiple calls for smoke and fire in the 400 block of Monument Place in the southeast Meridian industrial park.  On arrival crews were met with large volumes of smoke and large amounts of fire spreading from pallets in the yard area to several vehicles in the yard.  Intense heat was impinging on buildings in the yard and crews were able to quickly apply water to the fire to prevent further extension.

Firefighters used large caliber hose lines and an elevated stream from an aerial ladder to first control and confine the fire and then to knock the fire down.  Fire crews made entry into 2 buildings on site ensuring that there were no occupants.  Damage to the buildings was limited to minor smoke damage on the interior and minor heat damage to the outside.  Several small brush fires had to extinguished in vegetation areas around the site that were started by the intense heat of the fire as well as embers carried by the wind.

The Calgary Police Service was on scene assisting with perimeter control as well as AHS paramedics.  Fire crews remain on scene extinguishing hot spots and assisting investigators.  The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
