Inaugural Calgary Municipal Golf Championship a Swinging Success

The first-ever Calgary Municipal Golf Championship made a memorable debut over the August long weekend, uniting nearly 60 golfers of varying skill levels for two days of competition, community and varying weather conditions. The championship unfolded across two of Calgary’s most popular municipal courses.

Day one, Saturday, August 2, was held at Maple Ridge Golf Course, a mature, tree-lined 18-hole course known for its scenic fairways, strategic bunkering, and challenging layout that rewards shot-making and course management. On Sunday, August 3, players moved to McCall Lake’s 18-hole course, a track that blends open fairways with water features and subtle elevation changes, offering both accessibility for newer players and shot challenges for seasoned golfers.

The tournament was open to adults 18 and over, attracting a diverse group of competitors—some entering their first tournament, others bringing caddies for added support. Despite a short spell of rain on Saturday, the skies quickly cleared, and players enjoyed sunny weather for most of the weekend.  It was evident when the weather cleared up that players were able to maximize their scoring opportunities.

Players praised the organization and set up of the tournament. “The Municipal Championship was a great introduction to competitive golf, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is wanting to get into the competitive scene,” said participant Josh.  “The organizers and staff worked above and beyond to put on a great event, and I will definitely be competing again next year.”

From the first tee-off to the final putt, the energy, sportsmanship, and community spirit on display were nothing short of inspiring,” said John Faber City of Calgary Golf Lead. “We saw seasoned players and rising talent come together on the fairways. It was a proud moment for Calgary, and a strong foundation for what I know will become one of the most anticipated events in our golf calendar each year.”

Participants received first tee kits at registration and were treated to both flight prizes and draw prizes throughout the event. The spirit of sportsmanship was on full display, and organizers noted the energy and excitement shared by competitors from all walks of life.

Looking ahead, the City of Calgary golf team hopes to make the Calgary Municipal Golf Championship an annual event, evolving its format and offerings over time. Early details for next year’s tournament are expected to be announced in 2026.
