Impairment and speed believed to be factors in multi-vehicle collision
Three people were taken to the hospital following a multi-vehicle collision late yesterday in northeast Calgary.
At approximately 11:50 p.m. yesterday, Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025, a 2002 Ford F-350, driven by a man in his 20s, was travelling westbound on 16 Avenue at a high rate of speed and entered the intersection at 68 Street N.E., when the light was red. At the same time, a 2010 Honda Civic, driven by a man in his 40s, was travelling southbound on 68 Street N.E., and entered the same intersection.
The Ford struck the Honda, causing both vehicles to rotate. The Ford entered the eastbound turning lanes of 16 Avenue, where it collided with a Nissan Versa, driven by a woman in her 20s.
Before hitting the Nissan, the Ford also made contact with a 2013 Honda Civic that was stopped in the right turn lane, and may have also connected with a 2006 GMC Cutaway that was stopped behind the Honda.
The drivers of the Ford, the Nissan and the 2010 Honda were transported to the hospital and sustained minor injuries.
The drivers of the 2013 Honda and the GMC were not injured and remained at the scene.
Impairment and speed on the part of the Ford F-350 driver are believed to be factors in this collision. Charges are pending.
The intersection of 16 Avenue and 68 Street N.E. has proven to be a dangerous location. This summer, we submitted a business case exemption request to reactivate the Intersection Safety Cameras (ISCs) for both red-light and speed-on-green enforcement at the eastbound and westbound intersections of 16 Avenue at 68 Street N.E. The business case was approved and the ISCs were reactivated on Friday, Oct. 3, 2025.
In 2024, 37 collisions were reported at this intersection. Between January and July 2025, speeds of up to 192 km/h were recorded at this intersection, in the posted 70 km/h zone.
The benefits of Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE) on all major roadways with high traffic volume include:
- A reduction of the average vehicle speed
- Reductions in total collisions, including injury collisions, fatal collisions and pedestrian collisions
- Allowing for adequate and safe traffic enforcement on roads where there is little room for officers to safely conduct traditional speed enforcement
- Maintaining safer motorist behaviour with the deterrent of fines issues via ATE for driving at dangerous speeds
- Allowing patrol officers to be available to respond to the already challenging and busy calls for service placed by Albertans on a daily basis
