Homicide Investigation Update #4 – Victim Identified

An autopsy has been completed in relation to the homicide of an innocent business owner in southwest Calgary. Calgary Police Service homicide investigators continue to search for evidence and ask for people with information to come forward.

The victim had responded to a break-and-enter alarm at his business around 3 a.m., on Saturday, March 14, 2020. Police attended the scene and searched the business before clearing the location. The victim then remained in the parking lot waiting for the business to be secured until approximately 6 a.m., at which time it is believed at least three offenders returned to the scene.

It is alleged the three suspects were attempting to gain access into an adjoining cannabis store through the victim’s business in the 3800 block of Bow Trail S.W.

During the encounter, the victim suffered fatal injuries. He was able to walk a short distance to a nearby business where emergency crews were called.

Following an autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the victim has been identified as 56-year-old Christophe HERBLIN of Calgary.

Investigators initially asked for help locating a Dodge Calibre related to this incident. With the assistance of the RCMP, the vehicle was located and one man was taken into custody, who has since been released. Police continue to investigate his involvement in the homicide, if any.

The family of Christophe Herblin have shared a brief statement and a photo of Christophe in hopes that people who have information related to this incident will come forward.

“There are no words that I can say that will be adequate to describe Christophe. He was a kind, generous, and gentle man. He loved his family, cooking, animals, motorcycles, good friends and wonderful food and wine. He worked extremely hard to realize his dream of opening his own cafe. That dream was cut short by this senseless tragedy. He was much loved and will be missed always. Our hearts are broken.”
