HomeSpace Society selected to develop transitional housing for families with children

The City of Calgary has selected HomeSpace Society to develop transitional housing on two City-owned sites to support families with children who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness, as part of The City’s Housing Strategy.  The City of Calgary earlier released an Expression of Interest to select a housing provider to develop housing on the two sites, which closed on January 15, 2024.

“I'm pleased to see one of our trusted partners, HomeSpace, selected to develop much-needed family homes in our city,” says Mayor Gondek. “We learned that one of the best ways to advance housing for families in precarious situations is to offer City-owned land to experts in supportive housing. These two sites will make a difference in the lives of families who deserve to live with dignity.”

The housing projects, set to commence as soon as possible, underscore the commitment to move quickly on supporting non-market homes and affordability.

“HomeSpace is thrilled to be selected to help address Calgary’s housing crisis by building affordable family housing on these two sites. We envision 3 bedroom residential townhouses that will blend seamlessly into the community while providing beautiful homes for families at risk of homelessness a safe supported place to thrive.” - Bernadette Majdell, CEO, HomeSpace Society

HomeSpace Society is a registered charity with the sole mission to build, maintain, and manage affordable housing for vulnerable Calgarians. HomeSpace owns and runs a portfolio of 892 units of housing in over 34 properties throughout Calgary and serves over 1,300 residents. In each of these properties, HomeSpace partners with a social service agency that provides wrap-around support to keep residents safely housed and connected with the resources they need to thrive. HomeSpace has a strong growth mandate to build more specialized, permanent, affordable housing to address the growing crisis in our city. For more information visit https://www.homespace.org/.

“Calgary Homeless Foundation is proud to be working with HomeSpace, the City of Calgary and the Provincial government to ensure all mothers, fathers, grandparents, and children have a home and the supports they need to thrive.” says Patricia Jones, President and CEO, Calgary Homeless Foundation

“Calgary needs more homes and this is just one of the many ways we are working to meet that need and implement The City’s Housing Strategy. HomeSpace Society has a strong track record of delivering housing for people in need and we’re delighted to partner with them on these sites to deliver this much needed housing. We look forward to seeing this project move quickly over the next year.” says Tim Ward, Manager of Housing Solutions.

The City of Calgary’s Housing Strategy contains 98 actions that addresses the housing crisis, creating more homes in all shapes and sizes in all neighbourhoods to ensure every Calgarian has an affordable place to call home.
