HomeSpace Society Breaks Ground on New Affordable Townhomes

HomeSpace Society is thrilled to announce the ground-breaking of its newest development in the community of Whitehorn/Horizon on November 1st. This development marks a significant step towards the strategic collaboration needed to tackle Calgary’s housing crisis head-on while aligning with HomeSpace’s mission to ensure that everyone in our community has access to safe, secure, and affordable housing.  

In February this year, HomeSpace Society was selected to develop transitional housing on two City-owned sites in Whitehorn and Shawnee Slopes to support families with children who are at risk of or experiencing homelessness. Each development will feature up to 52 units of 2-storey, 2-4-bedroom townhouses on each site. These homes will provide much-needed affordable housing as well as amenity space, playgrounds, ample parking, and supportive programming ensuring a nurturing environment for families to thrive. HomeSpace hopes to begin construction on the Shawnee Slopes site later this winter.

These developments are part of The City’s Housing Strategy to increase the supply of housing to meet demand and increase affordability.  

"During the City's public hearing on the Housing Strategy last September, we heard heartbreaking stories of families with children who are at risk of or are experiencing homelessness. While The City is making good progress on the Housing Strategy, the housing crisis continues to persist due to socio-economic pressures. It's clear that we cannot afford to have a status-quo approach and must quickly develop emergency housing for at risk families." said Mayor Jyoti Gondek.
