Green cart moving to winter collection schedule next week

The Green Cart composting program will be moving to a winter collection schedule starting the week of November 6th. Calgarians can visit calgary.ca/collection to find out their new green cart schedule and to sign up for free reminders.

The City is moving to this new winter collection schedule as Calgarians have less yard waste to put in their green carts during the winter months. This change means that starting the week of November 6th green carts will be collected every other week. Green carts will be collected on the same day of the week as before, but every other week. New collection routes will be in effect so it is important for Calgarians to check their new schedule online and have their carts out by 7 a.m. on collection day.

“Calgarians have really embraced the Green Cart program so we wanted to give them time to get used to composting at home,” explained Laura Hamilton, Waste Diversion Specialist with The City of Calgary. “Now that it’s been a year, Calgarians have been asking us to collect their green carts less often in the winter and the data shows decreasing volumes with less yard waste going into the carts during the winter months. So it made sense to make the change to a winter green cart schedule although it is still important to compost your food waste as well as food soiled paper and tissues.”

There are no changes to blue or black cart collection. Weekly green cart collection will resume in the spring.

Calgarians can sign up for free reminders including phone, email and text alerts or download the free Garbage Day app to receive notifications on their smartphones. For more information on cart collection schedules and to sign up for free reminders, visit calgary.ca/collection.
