Glenmore Athletic Park’s new track hits the ground running with strong support from the athletic community
Calgarians now have a renewed place to run, train and compete with the completion of the Track and Field Redevelopment at Glenmore Athletic Park, one of the city’s vital recreation hubs.
Located in the southwest corner of Glenmore Athletic Park (5300 19 St. S.W.), the World Athletics Class II certified facility replaces the aging track originally built in the 1960s.
With a total investment of $13.8 million, including $2.8 million in provincial funding under the Municipal Sustainability Initiative, the project brings Calgarians a modern venue for sport, recreation and community engagement.
The upgraded facilities opened for group bookings in spring 2025 and will be available for public use beginning next year.
“The new track at Glenmore Athletic Park has been a welcome upgrade for our member groups this season,” says James Holder, President of Calgary Track Council. “The surface quality and layout have made training and competition more enjoyable and efficient. While we’re still adjusting to the new location and setup, overall feedback from athletes and coaches has been very positive. It’s a facility that’s already making a meaningful difference for Calgary’s track and field community.”
The redevelopment included:
· A 400-metre, eight-lane running track.
· A natural turf multi-sport field.
· A dedicated throwing sport area.
· Relocated bleachers for improved viewing.
“This project is a significant step forward in supporting Calgary’s amateur sport community,” says Kerensa Swanson Fromherz, Director of Public Spaces Delivery. “The new Class A/B facilities will not only enhance the experience for recreational users but also position Calgary to host provincial and national-level competitions.”
The redevelopment replaces aging infrastructure that had reached the end of its lifecycle and was costly to maintain. The new amenities are designed to meet modern athletic standards while improving accessibility, placemaking and connectivity to the surrounding community. The new amenities will also reduce annual maintenance costs and increase reliability. Relocating the track will make room for the planned future redevelopments of the athletic fields along 50 Avenue S.W.
A neighbouring 15-stall washroom building is nearly complete and will be ready to support track users, park visitors and the broader community in time for next season.
The Glenmore Athletic Park redevelopment is part of a broader vision that includes the future Glenmore Twin Arena, which will replace the aging Stu Peppard Arena. Construction on the arena is underway and is expected to be complete in 2027, further enhancing the area’s capacity to support year-round athletic programming.
GamePLAN

The new track, multi-sport field and universal washrooms support GamePLAN’s goals to “Level the Playing Field” and “Change the Game,” ensuring that residents of all ages and abilities can enjoy high-quality recreation opportunities. As part of a broader vision to enhance community well-being, Glenmore Athletic Park is a key step toward realizing a more vibrant and equitable Calgary.
