Former fastball association board member caught stealing and charged with fraud

We have charged a woman who is believed to have embezzled more than $125,000 while serving as a treasurer for a Calgary-based girls fastball association.

Between 2019 and June 2023, the woman served as a vice president and a treasurer on the association’s board, where she was entrusted with access to and signing authority for its bank accounts. She became the treasurer in 2021 after finishing her term as vice president.

On Friday, June 16, 2023, the board’s president and vice president noticed something was off base with their financials when a cheque written for a tournament fee was returned due to insufficient funds. The two board members reviewed the association’s bank statements and discovered that the woman had been sending e-transfers from its accounts to her personal accounts and deposited cheques written to and signed by herself. They also found that the association’s accounts held negative balances, and the association owed several thousand dollars to various vendors, for which she was responsible for paying on its behalf.

On Wednesday, June 21, 2023, the two board members reported the suspected fraud to police.

Following a thorough investigation, an officer discovered the woman had embezzled more than $125,000 between 2021 and 2023 by depositing cheques and e-transfers from the association’s accounts into three separate bank accounts held in her name.

As a result, Leilani CALMUSKY, 45, of Calgary, has been charged with one count each of:

  • Defrauding a person over $5,000
  • Breach of trust

She is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024.

We encourage businesses that have suffered financial loss as a result of fraud to report it to police.
