First Skate at Olympic Plaza

Lace up your skates - the First Skate of the season is happening this Sunday, Nov. 20 at Olympic Plaza. Come out from noon until 3 p.m. and enjoy a family fun skate on the only refrigerated outdoor ice surface in the city, right in the heart of downtown Calgary.

Calgary Transit will be on site helping skaters keep warm with free hot chocolate, as well as live entertainment featuring Transit Teddy.

“We’re thrilled to be a part of this seasonal tradition, providing Calgarians a fun way to welcome winter and spend some quality time with their friends and family,” said Stephen Tauro, a spokesperson for Calgary Transit.

Skaters taking transit to the event can enjoy free CTrain service between 11 a.m and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20.

Olympic Plaza will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. for public skating from Nov. 20 until mid-March 2023. Skate rentals are available from the Skate Hut at the plaza. Please note that hockey sticks, toboggans, sleds, and strollers are not permitted on the ice, and helmets are strongly encouraged.

“We are pleased to welcome Calgarians to the Olympic Plaza for another season of skating. This rink is easily accessible by Calgary Transit and provides a great outdoor activity space for all to enjoy throughout the winter season," said Carmen Hindson,  Manager of Parks Operations.
