Fire in Southeast Calgary Church

On August 12th, at approximately 3:20 am the Calgary Fire Department responded to a call for a possible building fire in the 1500 block of Lake Ontario Drive in the southeast community of Lake Bonavista.  On arrival, crews found smoke and flame coming from a window of a community church.  Firefighters quickly deployed hose lines and began attacking the fire from the outside bringing the fire under control.  Crews were able to gain access to the church and found involvement of fire in the large assembly area.  Other areas of the building were not impacted by fire, but had extensive smoke.  Damage to the assembly area is extensive from both heat and smoke.

Firefighters extinguished interior hotspots and were able to conduct a search of the entire building, determining that it was unoccupied.  With the size and type of building, additional aerial fire apparatus were deployed to provide access and elevated firefighting operations.  Due to the ambient outdoor temperature, additional firefighters were dispatched to the scene to provide relief for working crews.

One firefighter was assessed by on scene Fire Response Paramedics for heat exhaustion and there were no injuries.  Calgary Police and AHS provided support on scene, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.  Fire crews will remain on site for the next several hours, and traffic in the area may be impacted.
