Fire destroys south east pet cremation facility, no injuries reported

Fire crews responded to a large fire at a pet cremation and incineration facility Thursday morning, with multiple 911 callers reporting heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure located on 114th Avenue South East. 

The Calgary Fire Department was dispatched at 9:40 a.m. and arrived to find the structure fully involved. Firefighters worked quickly to contain the blaze, bringing it under control by 10:20 a.m.  Fire crews used specialized apparatus called Tenders which have larger tanks and carry approximately four times the amount of  water compared to a regular fire engine.  These were necessary as there were no fire hydrants nearby.

No injuries have been reported as a result of this fire. The building where the fire originated was completely destroyed, but no damage was reported to neighbouring structures. Due to a damaged to a gas line, ATCO was called to assist and the gas line has now been shut down. 

 A fire investigator was also on scene to determine the exact origin and cause of this fire. ‘Fire watch’ is currently in place.
