Fire at Southeast Industrial Recycling Facility
On July 12th, 2024 at approximately 9:00PM the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) responded to multiple 911 calls for a large fire in a southeast industrial facility. On arrival at the 5800 block of 12 street southeast crews found large volumes of dark smoke and flames pushing from a metal recycling plant. There were reports of a possible explosion followed by a large fire. Crews were forced to deploy water supply lines from outside the compound due to distance from the roadway to the area involved in fire.
11 fire apparatus were dispatched, and crews utilized 2 aerial ladders to flow water into the area on fire. While accessing the main body of fire was challenging for crews, the fire was quickly brought under control. On site workers assisted with heavy equipment to pull apart the burning materials and allow firefighter to access the seat of the fire. There were no injuries and all on scene staff from the site were accounted for. Smoke from the fire was visible from great distance, however the smoke plume did not drift into any residential areas.
The cause of the fire is currently being investigated and crews will be on scene through the night ensuring there are no hot spots.
Shortly after this fire was wrapping up, calls for a house fire in the southwest community of Shawnessy were received by CFD. Crews arrived to find smoke and flames issuing from a detached two-story single-family dwelling on Shawglen Road southwest. The fire was quickly controlled, and the property searched. The search revealed that there was no one inside the structure. The cause of this fire is also under investigation and crews will be on scene through the night.
