Fire at SAIT Campus

On April 29th, 2022 at approximately 11:00 AM the Calgary Fire Department responded to alarms for a possible building fire at the 1300 block of 16th avenue northwest.  On arrival at the SAIT campus, crews found building alarms, and occupants evacuating the 4 story building adjacent to 16th avenue.  People leaving the building confirmed that there was smoke on the second floor and potentially a fire in one of the instructional areas.

Crews made entry to the building and proceeded to the second floor where they found large volumes of smoke and near zero visibility in the welding shop area.  Firefighters located the fire in an air filtration unit in the shop and utilized both extinguishers and hose lines to bring the fire under control.  While fire attack was taking place, firefighters proceeded to evacuate all floors of the building due to large amounts of smoke, poor air quality and potential for fire spread.  The fire was brought under control and confined to the air filtration unit.  After extinguishment, crews focused efforts on reducing water damage and venting the products of combustion out of the building.  Over 30 personnel were on scene to ensure that the occupants were safe and evacuated and CPS assisted with ensuring the perimeter was controlled.

The building will not be reoccupied for at least 24 hours while remediation of the damage occurs.  Crews will remain on scene into this afternoon and the cause of the fire is being determined by investigators.
