Fatality Housefire in Penbrooke Meadows

On February 17th, 2023 at approximately 3:00 AM, the Calgary Fire Department responded to 911 calls for a housefire in the 500 block of Penworth Way in the southeast community of Penbrooke Meadows.  On arrival, fire crews found heavy smoke and flame pushing from a single story, detached residential home.  Three occupants had evacuated from the home, with one occupant suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.  Crews were met with high heat and flames on entry and proceeded to the basement where there was a large fire.  Firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control and begin searching the home for additional occupants.

Initial search of the basement revealed a 71-year-old male occupant that had suffered fatal injuries from the fire.  The evacuated occupants were transported to hospital by EMS on scene.  Continued search of the occupancy found one pet deceased as well.  Damage from the fire is significant both in the basement and in the upper level of the home.  The fire did not spread from the house of origin.  Atco and Enmax were on scene assisting with utilities and the Calgary Police Service assisted with control of the incident perimeter.

Calgary Fire Department investigators and Calgary Police Arson are on scene investigating the cause of the fire and crews will remain on scene throughout the day assisting the investigation and keeping the scene safe.

The Calgary Fire Department would like to remind citizens of the importance of working smoke alarms and ensuring that you have an escape plan for your home.
