Fatal collision under investigation

The Calgary Police Service Traffic Section is currently investigating a fatal collision that occurred yesterday evening.

At approximately 10:15 p.m., on Monday, Jan. 28, 2019, police were called to the intersection of 36 Street N.E., and Sunridge Way N.E., for reports of a collision.

A 2009 BMW driven by a 20-year-old man was travelling eastbound along Sunridge Way N.E. It is believed that the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck the south shoulder concrete barrier, which directed the vehicle eastward across a concrete traffic island, before striking the concrete barriers that separate 36 Street N.E., from the CTrain right-of-way.

The driver of the vehicle and two passengers – a 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old man – received minor injuries.

Another passenger – a 19-year-old man – received life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Alcohol and drugs are not considered factors in this collision.

Police are investigating to determine whether speed may have been a factor.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the police non-emergency number at 403-266-1234.
