Fatal collision on Stoney Trail

A 25-year-old man died this morning in a collision that occurred on Stoney Trail between the exits of Deerfoot Trail and Harvest Hills Boulevard N.E.

Around 7:15 a.m., the man was driving eastbound when he lost control of his grey Ford Focus and rolled into the north ditch. The vehicle struck the concrete base of an overhead highway sign before coming to a stop.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

We continue to investigate the fatal collision, but early indications are that excessive speed may have been a factor.

Eastbound Stoney Trail was closed for most of the morning commute while emergency crews responded to and investigated the collision. The road was completely reopened in the early afternoon.
