Fatal collision on Peigan Trail

The Calgary Police Service Traffic Section continues to investigate a fatal collision that occurred yesterday afternoon.

At approximately 4:15 p.m., on Wednesday, April 17, 2019, police were called to the 4700 block of Peigan Trail S.E., for reports of a collision. A car, driven by a man in his 30s, was travelling westbound on Peigan Trail when it passed a semi-tractor-trailer unit at a high rate of speed. The car then braked aggressively prior to striking a newer model Honda CRV, operated by a man in his 50s.

After striking the CRV, the car began to rotate as it crossed the gravel-covered centre median onto the eastbound travel lane. The car was struck on the right-hand side by an eastbound Jeep SUV, operated by a woman in her early 20s.

The car and the Jeep came to rest on the south shoulder of the roadway. The CRV came to a controlled stop on the north shoulder.

As a result of the collision, the driver of the car was pronounced deceased and the driver of the Jeep suffered serious injuries. The driver of the CRV was uninjured in the collision.

Neither alcohol nor drugs are considered factors in this collision; however excessive speed on behalf of the car is considered a contributing factor.
