Fatal collision in the city’s northwest

We are currently investigating a fatal collision that occurred earlier today.

At approximately 6:15 a.m., on Friday, July 9, 2021, a black, 2009 Ford Taurus was travelling northbound on 14 Street N.W. At the same time, a white, 2015 BMW X1 was travelling southbound on the same street.

The Ford crossed over to the southbound lanes and struck the BMW head on, coming to rest near the west curb. The front of the Ford was badly damaged and started on fire. The BMW was propelled backward and turned around to face north in the middle of the road. It was also badly damaged.

The driver of the Ford was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision and suffered fatal injuries. Bystanders extracted the driver from the vehicle due to the fire and after EMS arrived on scene, he was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the BMW suffered minor injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment.

Speed and drug impairment of the driver of the Ford are being investigated as factors in this collision.
