Family of three seriously injured after vehicle collides with restaurant

The Calgary Police Service is investigating after a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed left the road and struck a restaurant, injuring a family of three.

At approximately 6:20 p.m., on Monday, Aug. 5, 2019, a grey Acura was travelling at a high rate of speed eastbound on 17 Avenue S.W.

As the Acura approached 12 Street, the driver of the vehicle made a sharp left turn but was unable to enter 12 Street, which was fenced off with a sign indicating no entry due to road construction.

The vehicle left the roadway at the northeast corner of the intersection and drove through the large glass window of the KFC, located at 1240 17 Ave. S.W. The vehicle struck a family of three – a man, 33, a woman, 34, and an eight-month-old infant – who were sat at a table near the window

The family was transported to hospital in serious, life-threatening condition and were later deemed stable.

The driver of the Acura suffered minor injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.

Although alcohol or drugs are not considered factors, excessive speed is considered a factor in the collision.
