Explosion and Fire in Mahogany Under Investigation

Calgary, AB – At approximately 3:15 p.m. on November 21, 2024, Calgary 911 began receiving multiple calls reporting an explosion, fire, and building collapse in the 600 block of Mahogany Road S.E.

While en route, the first arriving fire officer observed flames and a large plume of smoke visible from several blocks away. Recognizing the severity of the situation, a second alarm was immediately called to bring additional resources to the scene.

When Calgary Fire Department (CFD) crews arrived, they found a residential townhouse unit had collapsed and was fully involved in fire. Debris from the building was scattered across the street, consistent with an explosion. The fire had spread to neighbouring townhouse units and was rapidly intensifying.

Crews worked quickly to contain the fire and simultaneously conducted searches and evacuations. While the source townhouse was unoccupied at the time of the incident, several adjacent units were occupied, and residents were safely evacuated.

Four people were injured in the incident, including two civilians and two firefighters. One civilian was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

This incident required extensive collaboration between multiple agencies. The Calgary Police Service assisted with traffic control and evacuations, while Alberta Health Services EMS provided medical assessment and treatment for residents, workers, and firefighters. Calgary Transit supplied buses to shelter displaced residents, and utility providers ATCO and ENMAX worked to isolate the affected area’s utilities.

Calgary Fire Department investigators remain on the scene, working to determine the origin and cause of the explosion and fire. Anyone with photos or video of the incident prior to the CFD’s arrival is encouraged to email them to piofire@calgary.ca
