Emergency Operations Centre opened for hazardous materials located in southwest Calgary

The City of Calgary has opened the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) to manage the controlled disposal of potentially explosive materials found in the 4700 block of First Street S.W. 

At approximately 12 p.m., today, Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2025, the Calgary Police Service (CPS) Tactical Unit responded to a call regarding a suspicious package in the Manchester Industrial area. Upon arrival, members worked with the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) to determine next steps. It is believed the package was wrongfully delivered to a business in the area and the materials are too unstable to move.  

Due to the elevated risk of hazards associated with moving the materials, it has been decided that the Tactical Unit will move forward with procedures to render the materials safe through a series of controlled detonations on site. 

Crews are currently working to set up the necessary infrastructure and work will continue early tomorrow morning. 

We recognize that this will cause significant disruptions in the area. At this point, it is unknown how long it will take to safely dispose of the materials, and we ask the public and local businesses for patience as we manage this situation. 

We also ask the public to stay clear of the area.  

Calgary Transit and Roads Impacts 

It’s expected that traffic flow as well as Calgary Transit bus and LRT services will be impacted during the morning commute. More information will be shared once available.
