Early Morning Fire in Southwest Calgary Apartment

On January 7th, 2023 at approximately 5:00 in the morning, the Calgary Fire Department Responded to a possible building fire in an apartment block on Richard Court in southwest Calgary.  On arrival, crews investigated and found damage from a fire and working fire sprinklers on a second-floor exterior balcony.  Crews noted smoke within the building on entry, and as a precaution evacuated residents.  Further investigation revealed fire within the outside walls of several floors of the four-story building.  Due to the size of the building and the number of residents, a second alarm was called to support the scene.

Firefighters worked for several hours to expose hidden fire within the exterior walls of the building and to ensure there was no spread. Wall spaces for several units needed to be opened up as well as the attic area.  Only 6 units directly involved in the fire remain unoccupied at this time, and all other units have been reoccupied.  One resident was treated by onscene crews for minor injuries.  There is significant water damage and smoke damage in the involved suites.  Fire crews will continue to monitor the building and occupants throughout the day.

The cause of the fire is under investigation as crews continue to monitor the scene.
