Driver facing charges in multiple collisions along Macleod Trail

The driver of a stolen minivan remains in hospital today following a series of hit and run collisions along Macleod Trail that cumulated in a serious-injury collision near Southport Road S.E.

Around 1:30 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 29, 2021, police received multiple reports of a minivan which was stolen from the 7500 block of Macleod Trail S, being driven erratically on southbound Macleod Trail. The suspect hit at least seven vehicles and continued driving. Several victims were assessed by EMS on scene for minor injuries.

As police were responding to the area, the driver was travelling southbound on Macleod Trail when he struck a car that was turning left from northbound Macleod Trail onto Southport Road S.E. The minivan struck the traffic island and rolled, before striking two large street signs where it came to a stop. The driver, a man in his 30s, received life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital where he remains in serious but stable condition today. He was the only person transported to hospital.

The car that was struck by the minivan in the final collision came to a stop against the light standard. The driver and the passenger thankfully were not seriously injured.

Speed on behalf of the driver of the minivan is being considered a factor in this collision. Charges of theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and multiple counts of hit and run are pending against the minivan driver.

Anyone who witnessed the driving behaviour of the minivan, or who has dashcam footage, is asked to contact police at the non-emergency number 403-266-1234.
