Dig in this spring with green cart compost from The City of Calgary

This month Calgarians can visit the Shepard Landfill on one of three Sundays to pick up green cart compost to use in their flower beds, gardens and more.

“Last year’s compost giveaways were a huge success,” said Laura Hamilton, Waste Diversion Specialist with Waste and Recycling Services. “Calgarians continue to do a great job composting and we are thrilled to invite them back to pick up compost they helped produce by using their green carts at home.”

Last year The City had over 13 thousand visits to the first annual compost giveaway, giving residents the opportunity to take home a total of more than 1.5 million kilograms of compost. The City’s green cart program has diverted over 165 million kilograms of material to date. Calgarians have taken to composting with enthusiasm resulting in almost 50% less material going to the landfill. All the food and yard waste put into the green cart is turned into nutrient-rich compost which will be available to Calgarians at no cost.

Giveaway days

Dates: Sunday, May 12, 19 and 26

Hours: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The City asks that Calgarians do not arrive early to the event and recommends coming later in the day to avoid the initial rush. Compost is only available during giveaway days. Shepard Landfill is not accepting waste drop-off on Sundays.

Location: Shepard Landfill - 12111 68th St. SE.

The City reminds drivers not to stop on the side of the road or impede traffic.

What to bring: Calgarians can pick up 100 litres of compost per household. This is a self-serve event. Residents must hand load the compost and need to bring the following items:

  • Shovel
  • Gloves
  • Containers to hold compost (for example: buckets, tubs, etc.)
  • Tarps - if you are loading compost into a trunk or truck bed, your load must be secure and covered before leaving the event
