Count yourself in with the 2019 online Civic Census

It’s time for Calgarians to count themselves in, the 2019 civic census is now available online. Residents of Calgary will receive an access code in the mail which can be used on calgary.ca/census to complete their census online.

“The census online is fast and simple to use.” said Laura Kennedy, City Clerk, City of Calgary. “Census data is important to The City of Calgary as it helps us make informed decisions to plan City services that Calgarians use every day.”

The information collected is used by The City for the planning of services, such as roads, transit, recreation and water services. It is also used by the public and separate school boards for enrolment predictions and decisions on future schools; and by the provincial government for determining per capita grant allocations where available.

Calgarians will receive access codes beginning April 1 for the online census. If a resident does not receive their access code by April 9 or has lost their access code they can visit calgary.ca/census to request a new access code.

“We will only be communicating to residents by mail,” explained Kennedy. “We will not be phoning Calgarians and we will not be going door-to-door until after the provincial election. Census takers won’t be hitting the streets until April 22.”

Residents that require assistance completing census online can call 311 or wait for census takers going door-to-door beginning April 22. The Census can also be completed in person at one of our outreach events, which are listed in the City’s events calendar www.calgary.ca/calendar. Once the collection period is over, if a dwelling is missed, residents can call the Elections and Census office at 403-476-4100 (option 2) to provide their information.

All information provided during the census process is confidential and secure. Census data is available on a city-wide basis or by geographic areas such as communities, never identifying individuals or single dwellings. The 2019 census results will be available in late July once the census data is compiled.

New in 2018, historical census data can now be viewed in a new and interactive format. The Calgary Civic Census map allows users the ability to interact with census data across all aggregation levels related to civic census collection. The map can be viewed at maps.calgary.ca/census and will allow users to:

  • View census data by year dating back to 1999.
  • Interact with census data by various geographies (City-Wide, Ward and Community).
  • Download civic census data through our map-based interface for further analysis.
