Correctional Peace Officer charged

Following a year-long investigation, a Correctional Peace Officer at the Calgary Remand Centre has been charged in relation to allegations of assault against four inmates.

In March 2019, the Calgary Police Service was asked by the Crown Prosecutor’s Office to look into an allegation of excessive force by a Correctional Peace Officer. The alleged incidents took place on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2019. The first incident occurred in a cell in which the officer allegedly struck an inmate after responding to a disturbance.

The second incident is alleged to have taken place later on the same day when the same officer was called to respond to a fight between inmates outside in the yard. The investigation revealed the inmates had stopped fighting and complied with the officer’s commands, but were each subsequently assaulted. The guard also deployed OC Spray on one inmate.

Heera Singh CHAHAL, 29, has been charged with one count of assault with a weapon and four counts of assault causing bodily harm. He will next appear in court on Wednesday, April 15, 2020.
