City Services: Remembrance Day 2020

We're adjusting our hours of operation for Remembrance Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020.

Remembrance Day ceremonies
For many this year, events that commemorate and honour the sacrifices of Canadians to restore peace and freedom around the world will be moved online to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Here’s a few of the ways Calgarians can safely pay their respects:

The Military Museums
Our Remembrance Day service this year will be closed to the public. Because it is our mission to preserve the memories and traditions of our military heroes, we will be hosting a virtual event which will be live-streamed on our Facebook page beginning at 10:20 a.m. MT.

CBC Calgary will also livestream the ceremony starting at 10:30 a.m. on the CBC Calgary website and Facebook feed.

The Hangar Flight Museum
Our Remembrance Day ceremony this year is a private, indoor service (no public allowed), however CTV Calgary will provide a live TV broadcast and webstream to ensure everyone can participate from the safety and comfort of their homes. Coverage online begins at 10:40 a.m. at CTVNewsCalgary.ca, and the live TV broadcast joins the service in progress from 10:57 a.m. -11:30 a.m. The museum will be re-open to the public from 1 - 5 p.m. for admission. Ticket must be purchased online in advance.

There will be no Sunrise or Sunset ceremonies on Remembrance Day and the park will be closed to the public between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Remembrance Day Ceremony will be broadcast live on Global Calgary from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. and streamed online.

Please help protect the health and safety of those in our community by avoiding travel along Memorial Drive during the ceremony.
At 2 p.m. the park will reopen to the public but is limited to groups of 100 people on the field at any one time.

Canadian Pacific Remembrance Day Ceremony
This year, CP will live stream a private ceremony in place of a public gathering to respect COVID-19 protocols, as set forth by Alberta Health Services. CP invites viewers to watch the ceremony virtually commencing at 10:45 MT.

Though the ceremony is pared down, many important elements will still be incorporated, including the CP locomotive whistle sounding at 11:01 a.m. local time, and across the network where safe to do so, to start a moment of silence.

Faces of Freedom podcast series
In mid-October, The Government of Canada launched the Faces of Freedom podcast series. This series features eight episodes that highlight the experiences and stories of Veterans who served in the Second World War and other Canadians who commemorate their sacrifices. They are available on all major streaming platforms such as Apple Podcast, Spotify, and Google Play.

Central Memorial Park
There are no official ceremonies this year, those visiting the Cenotaph are reminded to maintain a safe distance from others and wear a face covering.

Flags lowered to half-mast
To honour the memory of those who have served and show appreciation for those who continue to serve our country, flags at all Government of Canada, Government of Alberta and City of Calgary facilities will be lowered to half-mast from sunrise to sundown on Remembrance Day.
