City Services: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 2026

Things to do

Orange Shirt Day Ceremony

Join us to commemorate Indian residential school victims, honour survivors and their families, and commit to acting on reconciliation. Remembering the Children.

Wednesday, Sept. 30, 9 to 10:30 a.m. at The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland, 750 9 Ave. S.E.

The program features keynote speakers, remarks from the Mayor, a moment of silence and cultural performances that highlight Indigenous traditions and youth voices, culminating in a round dance.

Together, we will reflect on the legacy of residential schools and reaffirm our commitment to truth, reconciliation and shared understanding.

The following structures will be illuminated orange in honour of National Truth and Reconciliation Day and as part of Calgary Culture Days, which highlights local events while honouring Orange Shirt Day:

  • Reconciliation Bridge
  • Centre Street Bridge
  • Calgary Tower

Additionally, flags on City of Calgary buildings will be lowered to half-mast.

Getting around

Calgary Transit
On Wednesday, Sept. 30, buses and CTrains will be operating on a modified Saturday level of service, in observance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On Demand will continue providing regular weekday service.

Calgary Parking
On-street ParkPlus zones will be free on Wednesday, Sept. 30. Weekend rates will apply at Calgary Parking parkades and surface lots. Regular rates will be in effect at partner lots, including TELUS Spark, Calgary Stampede, Calgary Zoo and Heritage Park.

The Calgary Parking Contact Centre and Impound Lot will be closed on Wednesday, Sept. 30. For more information, please visit Calgary Parking.

Drivers are also reminded to follow school-zone parking rules and avoid stopping or parking where it may block sightlines, crosswalks, driveways or traffic flow. For safe parking reminders around schools, visit CalgaryParking.com/SafeSchools.

Road construction and traffic safety
The following road closures may affect travel. Calgarians are encouraged to visit calgary.ca/trafficinfo before travelling for a full list of current traffic incidents, road closures and detours.

Southwest

  • 5 Avenue S.W. and 3 Street S.W. – multi-lane closures on 5 Avenue S.W. and a full road closure on 3 Street S.W. for ongoing ENMAX manhole rebuild work.
  • 14 Street S.W. between 17 Avenue S.W. and 19 Avenue S.W. – two-way traffic is in place on the west side during ongoing work.
  • 6 Avenue S.W. between 10 Street S.W. and 11 Street S.W. – two right lanes are closed until Oct. 6.
  • 8 Street S.W. project – northbound closure on 8 Street S.W. between 8 Avenue S.W. and 10 Avenue S.W. during ongoing project work.

Northwest

  • 16 Avenue N.W. at Monterey Avenue N.W. – lane reversal with two eastbound lanes on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Southeast

  • Highfield Crescent S.E. at 15 Street S.E. – full road closure for ongoing Deerfoot Trail Improvement Project work.
  • 6 Street S.E. underpass – lane closures on 9 Avenue S.E. between 5 Street S.E. and 8 Street S.E. for underpass project work.

Northeast

  • 16 Avenue N.E. and Deerfoot Trail N.E. – ongoing closure at 16 Avenue N.E. and Deerfoot Trail N.E.
  • Memorial Drive N.E. between 68 Street N.E. and Abbeydale Drive N.E. – multi-lane closures for project work.
