City of Calgary to relocate feeder main valves at Memorial Drive & 52 Street NE Intersection
The City of Calgary is proactively upgrading and investing in important water utilities and infrastructure at the Memorial Drive and 52 Street NE intersection.
Starting on or around Nov. 3, 2025, work will begin at the intersection to relocate valves from the high-volume intersection to a curb-side location. By relocating these valves, routine maintenance on valve chambers will be safer for workers and drivers while also minimizing impacts to traffic when maintenance is needed. Work is expected to take about nine to eleven weeks to complete.
This work will also set the stage for future feeder main extensions in the area. By extending the feeder main in the future, we are proactively supporting growth in this part of Calgary by ensuring that water infrastructure is able to support the needs of those living or working in the area.
Motorists should expect some lane reductions in the area. We understand Memorial Drive is a busy road used by many commuters entering or exiting Calgary's downtown core and are working to ensure disruptions are as minimal as possible, which is why the project has been strategically phased this way. Below are the phases of traffic closures; construction timing is subject to change and may be adjusted as needed. Timing can be affected by weather conditions, buried infrastructure conditions and supply chain. We will continue to update Calgarians on these closure phases as they are implemented.
Traffic detours schedule – subject to change:
| Phase | Timing | Closure Details |
| Phase 1 | Beginning of November until around or about mid-November | West of Intersection Memorial Drive at Forest Road SE will be reduced to one westbound lane to access downtown and one eastbound lane to exit downtown. |
| Phase 2 | Beginning on or around mid-November until about late-November | East of Intersection Memorial Drive between 52 Street NE to 59 Street NE will be reduced to two westbound lanes to reach downtown and one eastbound lane. |
| Phase 3 | Beginning on or around early-December until about mid-December | Far east of Intersection Memorial Drive will have westbound lanes closed and traffic going both ways on eastbound lanes between 59 Street NE and Madigan Drive NE. |
| Phase 4 | Beginning on or around early-December until about mid-December | Far east of Intersection Memorial Drive westbound lanes will be closed and traffic going both ways on eastbound lanes between Madigan Drive NE and 68 Street NE. |
| Phase 5 | Beginning on or around mid-December until about late-December or early-January 2026 | Main intersection work, and just north of Intersection A section just outside of the Memorial Drive and 52 Street intersection will see Eastbound Memorial Drive lanes reduced to one eastbound lane. A section just outside of the Memorial Drive and 52 Street intersection will see Westbound Memorial Drive lanes reduced to one westbound lane. Northbound lanes on 52 Street at the Memorial Drive intersection will be shifted to southbound lanes with traffic able to move in both north and south directions. |
While work is ongoing, motorists can take some steps to ensure their commutes are not impacted including:
· Planning extra travel time if you need to take Memorial Drive
· Choosing an alternate route
· Following posted detour and construction signage for their safety and that of construction crews
