City of Calgary announces residential street sweeping to start on Monday, April 18

If you see the sign, you know the time…

CALGARY - As seasons change and the last remaining ice on Calgary’s roadways has melted away, The City of Calgary is announcing the start of our annual Spring Clean-up program. Residential neighbourhoods will begin to see street sweeping signs in their communities later this weekend as the program prepares for a Monday morning start.

“Residential street sweeping will start on Monday, April 18. Sweeping happens Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.” says Jim Fraser, N.W. District Manager for Calgary Roads. “We’d like to thank citizens for their cooperation in removing vehicles from the roadway during street sweeping parking bans. Please ensure your vehicle is removed from the street during the community parking ban so our sweepers can clean the roadway.”

Residential street sweeping is an important annual program that removes debris that has accumulated on the road during the winter months. This debris is removed by street sweepers, which make multiple passes, to prevent the material from entering our stormwater system and increases safety for Calgarians.

The Calgary Parking Authority (CPA) will be supporting Roads during Spring Clean-up. “During street sweeping the Calgary Parking Authority uses our camera equipped cars to enforce the residential restrictions, because they are a quick and efficient way to support every street sweeping operation that Roads performs,” says Todd Sullivan, Coordinator of Parking Safety & Compliance for the CPA. “It’s a good reminder that if you don’t move your vehicle, don’t think you avoided a ticket just because it isn’t on your windshield - you will likely see it in the mail a few days later.”

Sullivan reminds Calgarians: “If you are working from home, it is still necessary to get your car off the road and onto a driveway, into a garage, a back alley or laneway or a surface lot. It is important to remember to check with owners of private surface lots before parking your vehicles there. Remember that the ban is in place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on your scheduled sweeping day"

The City offers many ways to ensure you are informed of street sweeping operations in your community.  Along with community signs placed around your community, Calgary.ca/sweep provides citizens an address lookup, signup for e-mail and text notifications and a virtual assistant who can help answer questions you may have about the street sweeping program.

“We encourage everyone to visit Calgary.ca/sweep, as it’s a great resource for information on our street sweeping program and offers opportunities to sign up for automated notifications for street sweeping in your community and ask our virtual assistant questions about the program,” says Fraser.

Residential street sweeping is expected to continue through June 2022.
