City of Calgary and partners to host Orange Shirt Day ceremony at The Confluence on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Orange Shirt Day is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about the history and ongoing impacts of the Indian residential school system in Canada. While there are opportunities throughout the year to learn about the history of the residential school system, this day is dedicated to honouring the children who were sent to residential schools in Canada and remember those who never returned home.

We invite all Calgarians to join us at The Confluence on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, September 30, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. to commemorate Orange Shirt Day.

“The day will begin with stories and time for commemoration and end in dance,” says Lorelei Higgins, Team Lead for The City’s Indigenous Relations Office. “This isn’t only a journey of healing, it’s also one of hope. By coming together as a community we build relationships, and through this are gifted the chance to lift each other up, fostering an environment of understanding and compassion.”

This event is free and open to the public.
