City of Calgary advancing Bearspaw South Feeder Main Improvements Project

The City of Calgary is moving forward with one of three planned major upgrades to Calgary’s drinking water system. The Bearspaw South Feeder Main (BSFM) Improvements Project is advancing to improve system reliability.

The BSFM project will be constructed in two stages, adding approximately 6km of parallel pipe of the same size as the existing BSFM. Over time, this new pipe will take over service from the current line.

Stage A: Shaganappi Pump Station to 73 St. N.W.

Stage A will be constructed first. Design was finalized in Q4 2025 and a Request for Proposal (RFP) for this work went to market today. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026 following award of the contract.  The new pipe will be installed via Micro-tunnelling in order to cross major obstacles including 16 Avenue, the Bow River, Sarcee Trail, the CPKC rail line, to avoid buried infrastructure and to minimize surface impacts to Calgarians. 

Future Work

Stage B extends the line from 73 St. N.W. to 89 St. N.W., with a potential extension to the Bearspaw Wastewater Treatment Plant. Option alignment planning is underway and design is expected to be complete by Q3 2026, with more information to be shared at that time.

Construction of the BSFM Improvements Project is expected to continue through to late 2028. Timelines may shift due to weather, supply chain challenges or other unforeseen circumstances.
