City invites Calgarians to pick up free compost this spring
The City of Calgary is offering free compost for residents to use in their yards and gardens this spring. Every Saturday in May Calgarians can visit the Calgary Compost Facility to pick up free compost to use in their flower beds, gardens and more.
“Calgarians are doing a great job composting,” says Laura Hamilton, Waste Diversion Specialist with Waste & Recycling Services. “We are thrilled to invite residents to pick up the free compost they helped produce by using their green carts at home.”
The City’s green cart program has diverted over 53 million kilograms of material to date. Calgarians have responded well to composting with over 30 per cent more material coming to the Calgary Composting Facility than previously estimated. All the food and yard waste put into the green cart is turned into nutrient-rich compost which will be available to Calgarians at no cost.
Dates: Saturday, May 5, 12, 19 and 26
Hours: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Residents can line up in their vehicles five minutes prior to the start of the event. Vehicles will be turned away prior to this time.
Location: Calgary Composting Facility, 12111 68th St. SE.
Calgarians can pick up to 100 litres of compost per vehicle. This is a self-serve event. Residents must hand load the compost and need to bring the following items:
- Containers to hold compost (for example: buckets, tubs, etc.)
- Tarps - if you are loading compost into a trunk or truck bed, your load must be secure and covered before leaving the event
