City Encourages Safe Celebrations During Flames’ Playoff Run

As part of the Calgary Flames’ 2022 Stanley Cup playoff run, The City of Calgary wants to support safe celebrations either at home, a local restaurant or bar, the Calgary Flames Red Lot on Stampede Grounds, or on 17th Avenue S.W.

The City has partnered with the Calgary Police Service, Calgary Flames, Alberta Health Services, Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis, 17th Avenue BIA and the Community Associations of Beltline and Mount Royal to ensure a safe Red Mile experience that allow citizens to celebrate the team’s chase for the Stanley Cup, support local businesses, and showcase community spirit in our city.

The following is an overview of the measures in place for the first round of the NHL Playoffs. Measures will be adjusted for future playoff rounds, as required.

Opening Round of NHL Playoffs

There are no planned road closures on 17 Avenue S.W. for the first round of the NHL playoffs. We encourage all Calgarians to stay off the road in order to stay safe and allow traffic to move.

Parking bans will be in effect along 17 Avenue S.W. between 2 St S.W. and 8 St S.W. starting at 7 p.m. during home playoff games. This will help facilitate the flow of traffic and enhance safety.

Alcohol is only permitted in licensed establishments and public consumption of cannabis is not allowed.

There will be additional police and community peace officers on home game nights to support safety on 17 Avenue S.W. The City’s 311 Operations Centre remains open 24 hours a day.

For health and safety information about the COVID-19 pandemic, please visit alberta.ca/covid and follow all provincial recommendations and guidelines, including staying home when feeling unwell.

Transit

On Calgary Flames home game nights, The City will be adding extra transit service to help support demand.

We remind anyone taking Calgary Transit that provincial rules still require you to wear face coverings while riding with us.

Travel to and from Calgary Flames playoff home games and 17 Avenue S.W. safely. If you are planning to drink, please use Calgary Transit or the services of a rideshare, taxi or limo – always remember to check the identity of both the driver and their vehicle before you get in.
