Charges pending in southeast standoff

One man remains in custody after a standoff that occurred yesterday after multiple road rage-related incidents.

On Tuesday, July 4, 2017, at approximately 9:40 a.m., a man driving a red truck drove towards a pedestrian who was walking in a parking lot located in the 300 block of 36 Street N.E. The driver yelled something indiscernible at the victim and proceeded to strike him with his vehicle. The driver yelled something else at the pedestrian and attempted to hit him again, however the pedestrian was able to dive out of the way. The driver fled the area while the victim called police.

Approximately 20 minutes later, it is alleged the same driver became involved in another road-rage incident with another vehicle while travelling on Hubalta Road S.E. Both drivers pulled into a parking lot located in the 5100 block of Hubalta Road S.E., exited their vehicles and engaged in a brief conversation. The conversation quickly escalated, at which point it it believed the driver of the red truck stabbed the other driver. The victim entered a neighbouring business and contacted police while the suspect fled in his vehicle. The victim was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, however has since been upgraded to stable.

A short time later, a police officer was flagged down by a passerby outside a convenience store located at 4500 block 8 Avenue S.E., after a customer encountered an armed man in the parking lot. The armed man matched the description of the suspect in the initial two incidents. The suspect drove away from the scene in his vehicle as police attempted to approach him.

The suspect was followed to a residence located in the 4500 block of 7 Avenue S.E. The armed suspect refused to exit the residence and the area was contained to protect the public’s safety, while negotiators, the Tactical Unit and the Canine Unit were called in. The boundary around the residence was moved a few times throughout the day to ensure that citizens were a safe distance from the site.

At approximately 5 p.m., the suspect came out of the residence and was safely taken into custody by members of the Tactical Unit. The suspect remains in custody and charges are pending.

No further information will be released at this time.
