Charges laid in fatal Deerfoot Trail collision

Police have charged a 29-year-old Red Deer man in relation to a fatal collision that occurred in the early morning hours today, Friday, Dec. 2, 2022.

At approximately 3:15 a.m. we responded to reports of a serious two-vehicle collision that occurred in the southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail near 32 Avenue N.E.

Upon arrival, we located a severely damaged car and a 2009 Ford F-150 pickup truck with significant front-end damage. Moments later, we discovered a lone occupant in the driver’s seat of the car, who was subsequently declared deceased at the scene. The driver of the Ford F-150 truck was located in the vehicle and determined to have sustained minor injuries.

Tyson Tyler GIROUX, 29, of Red Deer,  was taken into custody at the scene and has been charged with:

  • One count of failure or refusal to comply with a demand after an accident resulting in death
  • One count of impaired operation of a conveyance causing death
  • One count of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death

The victim has been identified, however, details pertaining to the victim’s identity and vehicle will not be released at this time as investigators are still working to complete next of kin notifications.

Today’s collision shows the risk of making the wrong decisions,” says Collision Reconstruction Unit Sgt. Colin Foster. “In this case, it was the decisions to drink and drive, and travel the wrong way on a roadway, which sadly resulted in the death of another motorist. The message is clear: do not drink and drive.”
