Charges laid following carjacking incident

We have taken one man into custody after an incident involving a stolen vehicle that occurred early this morning, which involved a carjacking and multiple instances of dangerous driving.

Early today, Sunday, Nov. 16, 2025, at approximately 2 a.m., police were called for reports that a suspect approached a man in the 900 block of 32 Avenue N.E. The suspect assaulted the man, stole the victim’s vehicle, a black Honda CRV, and fled the scene. Police circulated the area, however were unable to locate the suspect or the vehicle. The victim suffered minor injuries.

A short time later, citizens reported a CRV, matching the description of the stolen vehicle, driving into oncoming traffic in the northbound lanes of Crowchild Trail, near 17 Avenue S.W. HAWCS was able to locate the vehicle driving on Elbow Drive S.W., and continued to follow the vehicle from a safe distance, monitoring the driver behaviour and allowing officers on the ground time to get in place.

The suspect continued driving into the southeast community of Cranston attempting to carjack other vehicles. The suspect then drove into oncoming traffic on Deerfoot Trail. Due to the elevated risk to public safety demonstrated by the suspect, patrol officers quickly moved in to stop the vehicle. One man was taken into custody without incident.

Lawrence ALBADAWI, 20, of Calgary, has been charged with two counts of robbery, three counts of failing to comply with a probation order, one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified, possession of a controlled substance and three Traffic Safety Act offences. He was remanded in custody will next appear in court on Monday, Nov. 24, 2025. 

“The suspect’s actions in this incident created an extremely dangerous situation for everyone on the road,” says S/Sgt. Mike Sushelnitsky of the Real Time Operations Centre. “This incident required a significant amount of police resources to safely resolve. Through a co-ordinated response of our patrol officers and support units, including HAWCS, we were able to intervene, preventing further risk to the community.”

Investigators believe that there were several witnesses who were approached by the suspect in this incident who have not yet spoken to police. Anyone who has information is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234.
