Original release below

The Calgary Police Service Cyber/Forensics Unit has charged a man in relation to the ‘CanadaCreep’ investigation thanks to overwhelming help from the public and extensive investigative efforts.

On Monday, June 12, 2017, the CPS was alerted to a Twitter account titled ‘CanadaCreep’ that was posting inappropriate photos and videos of women, including images taken underneath skirts. The account was believed to be based in Calgary and the images were captured and distributed unbeknownst to the women. An investigation was launched immediately to determine the identity of the individual taking and distributing the images.

On Tuesday, June 13, 2017, a possible suspect was identified through a public tip and other cyber-investigative efforts. At approximately 5 p.m., one man was arrested without incident and multiple electronic devices were seized. A search warrant was executed on a residence in the community of Prestwick that resulted in an additional seizure of computers, storage devices and other electronics.

Investigators are currently examining multiple terabytes of data, including hundreds of thousands of images, from numerous electronic devices that were seized. Officers are in the process of identifying victims and determining what electronic evidence is relevant to this case.

A 42-year-old man from Calgary is currently in custody and waiting to see a Justice of the Peace. He is facing voyeurism-related charges in relation to three incidents, however the investigation is ongoing and more charges are anticipated. His name will be release once charges are officially laid.

Officers in the Cyber/Forensics Unit would like to thank members of the public who reported this online activity to police as well as those individuals who identified the accused. Members of the public, as well as officers who supported the investigation, were integral in bringing a quick resolution to this case.

Anyone who has identified themselves as a victim in any of the images posted online is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service non-emergency line at 403-266-1234.
