Charges laid in two 2023 shootings

Following an extensive investigation by our Organized Crime & Offender Management Section, we have charged a man after it is believed he is connected to two shootings that occurred in Calgary dating back to November 2023.

On Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, at approximately 4:05 a.m., we were called to a residence located in the 800 block of Abbotsford Drive N.E. At the time, it is believed multiple suspects broke into the residence, assaulted two adults, and demanded money and other items, before fleeing the residence.

Multiple gunshots were fired as the suspects were leaving, which struck neighbouring homes.

Two adults in the home suffered significant injuries as a result of the assault and were transported to hospital.

The next day, on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2023, at approximately 2 a.m., we were called to the area of MacEwan Glen Way N.W., for reports of a shooting.

At the time, it is believed shots were fired between two vehicles. No injuries were reported, however, several residences were struck by bullets.  

Evidence led investigators to believe the two incidents were connected and following a lengthy investigation, charges were recently laid.

As a result, Brian Timothy POTTS, 46, was arrested in Edmonton on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024, transported to Calgary and charged with:

·         Break and enter to commit robbery

·         Unlawful confinement

·         Two counts of reckless discharge of a firearm

·         Two counts of possession of a weapon knowing it is unauthorized

·         Three counts of possession of a weapon contrary to a prohibition order

He will next appear in court on Monday, Jan. 27, 2025.

“Thanks to the investigative work by the Organized Crime & Offender Management Section, we were able to lay charges in two separate shootings that impacted residential areas and left community members feeling fearful in their neighbourhoods,” says Staff Sgt. Ben Lawson of the Calgary Police Service Organized Crime Operations Unit. “This shows we will continue to investigate incidents even if several months have passed since they occurred, and we will work closely with our law enforcement partners in other jurisdictions to ensure those who put Calgarians at risk are held accountable for their dangerous actions, even if they have fled the city.”

We would like to thank several units within the Service that assisted in this investigation, and we would like to extend our thanks to the Edmonton Police Service for their support in arresting the suspect.
