Charges laid in Tuesday shooting, victim dies in hospital

A Calgary man is facing charges in relation to a shooting that occurred yesterday in the southeast community of Forest Lawn that has resulted in the death of another man.

Yesterday, Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at approximately 8:10 a.m., police were called for reports of a shooting in the 2200 block of 45 Street S.E. Upon arrival, an injured man was located and transported to hospital in life-threatening condition. Sadly, the man succumbed to his injuries a short while ago. As a result, the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit is now assisting with this investigation.

An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, June 16, 2022 at 9 a.m.

Officers who responded to the scene were able to quickly locate a suspect in the Erinwoods area and took them into custody. The suspect is now believed to be responsible for the shooting.

“We believe this was a targeted attack and a senseless act that has cost someone their life,” says Martin Schiavetta of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit. “Thankfully, we were able to locate, arrest and charge the person believed to be responsible in less than 48 hours. While a significant portion of shootings are targeted in our city, gun violence doesn’t just impact those involved in crime. It puts our entire community at risk. "

As a result, Sam Frank BARBERA, 35, is facing several charges in relation to the shooting, including:

  • One count of aggravated assault
  • One count of possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose
  • One count of unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • One count of knowingly possessing a firearm or restricted weapon
  • One count of possession of a weapon obtained by crime
  • One count of discharging a firearm with intent
  • Two counts of failure to comply with a release order

After consultation with the Crown Prosecution, BARBERA will be facing additional charges in relation to the death of the victim.

This marks the 14th homicide and 66th shooting in Calgary this year.
