Charges laid in Richard PEMBER homicide

The Calgary Police Service has laid charges in connection with a homicide that occurred earlier this week in the community of Bankview.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016, a man walked into a Calgary Fire Department station on 10 Avenue S.W., saying he needed help for his roommate. Firefighters drove the man back to a home in the 1800 block of 17 Street S.W., where they located a deceased man and contacted police.

The deceased man was later identified as Richard PEMBER, 58, of Calgary.

Two days after the incident, police asked for the public’s help to locate a person of interest in the case. The man was located early on Friday and was interviewed for most of the day by homicide investigators.

Zachery Frederick RIDER, 36, of no fixed address, is charged with one count of second degree murder. He is also charged with one count of assault and one count of assault with a weapon in relation to injuries sustained by a second victim at the same location where Richard PEMBER was found.

He is next scheduled to appear in court on Monday, Nov. 28, 2016.

The investigation is ongoing, however, police are not searching for any other suspects at this time.
